PEOPLE
While a graduate student at the University of Arizona, Doug Pancake designed his own program focused on creating innovative care environments for people with Alzheimer’s. Since that time, Doug has been a proponent of the drive for new senior housing and care models, speaking, writing, and teaching graduate courses on the topic, and working with industry-wide groups to effect change. Doug is currently Chairman of the Care Delivery and Design Improvement Committee (CDDIC) of the California Association of Healthcare Facilities (CAHF). The committee, which is composed of care providers, architects and deputy directors of CAHF and CAHSA, has succeeded in rewriting regulations to improve residents’ quality of life. Successes include increasing the length of corridors in skilled nursing homes, allowing social activities to be located closer to resident rooms, allowing for new, more homelike cluster designs, revising OSHPD’s Code Application Notice 234 rules (which has dramatically reduced the cost of maintaining and improving the physical plant of nursing facilities), and approval of wireless nurse call systems in skilled nursing facilities. Doug initially joined Irwin Pancake as an intern over 12 years ago. Education: Bachelor of Architecture University of North Carolina Post Graduate Certificate – The Business of Seniors Housing & Care
Before Greg Irwin became an architect, he literally grew up in the firm begun by his father, Carl Irwin, a pioneer in senior-housing design. Today Greg provides leadership in the conceptualization of Irwin Pancake Architects projects, integrating his client’s goals with the changing needs of customers to create products with powerful, marketable advantages. Greg also personally manages projects through all architectural phases, including schematic design, design development, contract document production, plan check and construction administration. He has written and presented talks on the use of computer technologies in architectural design and on the design of assisted-living housing for the elderly. Education: Professional Certificate in Gerontology (in progress)
John Gould has been a practicing architect for 35 years. Now in his tenth year with Irwin Pancake, he has served as project lead, responsible for managing all phases of projects from conceptual design through construction. His experience includes working with clients, coordinating consultants, securing approvals from government agencies and working with contractors in the field. In addition to his project leadership, John leads our quality control practice and our intern mentoring program. His careful eye assures that all drawings are correct and accurate before their submission to building departments. Education: Leadership Development Program
Chuck keeps the trains running on time at Irwin Pancake Architects; he provides leadership to multiple architects and project leaders, and manages the work schedule for the entire Irwin Pancake Architects organization. With over 25 years of experience in large-scale project architecture (including such massive projects as Ikea’s 1.7 million sq. ft. North America Distribution Facility) he brings a wealth of management insight to our firm. Chuck’s great passion is advancing the practice of architecture through information technology, which he is now pursuing as the leader of our Building Information Modeling (BIM) initiative.
