TECH UPDATE

Chuck Good-Man AIA

Chuck Good-Man, Director of Architecture for Irwin Pancake Architects, was recently quoted in the July publication of BUILDINGS Magazine, a source for Building Industry Facilities Decision-Makers. The article, “Building Smarter, Faster, Cheaper with BIM” (Building Information Modeling), explores the many ways this technology offers: design freedom, building analysis, streamlined documents, errors & omission resolution, easier scheduling and is also effective in facility management.

Chuck explains why energy analysis and modeling are just a few of the ways that BIM results in a more efficient building. “You can start doing ‘what-ifs’. The software can help architects predict energy costs and understand how the design will impact energy use”.

Chuck recently attended the AGC (Associated General Contractors) BIM Forum in Lake Tahoe. Nearly 150 attendees, including designers, contractors, subcontractors, owners, lawyers and academics, conducted working sessions, explored new BIM methods and collaborated to develop the best practices that will guide the industry as it moves toward BIM adoption.

Irwin Pancake made the switch to BIM two years ago with the help of Graphisoft reseller, Digital Vision. To help ease and accelerate the process, DigitalVision provided an ‘embedded BIM expert’ who worked directly with project teams at the firm’s office as they transitioned from 2D to 3D. What’s more remarkable is that the firm transitioned to BIM during a period of rapid expansion as it more than doubled size.

Local Architect Recognized as "Person of the Year"

50+ Housing Council

Costa Mesa, CA - Carl Irwin, AIA, a forty-plus year resident of Seal Beach was honored as "Person of the Year" at the 50+ Housing Council of Southern California's annual SAGE Awards. The SAGE Award for Person of the Year recognizes an individual for their commitment, personal compassion and professional contributions to housing and related services to residents 50+. At the event on November 28th Carl was quick to add, "Although the award was presented to me, I could not have accomplished any of this without a dedicated and talented staff."

Carl's career commitment to Southern California's seniors began in 1966 as the Principal of Irwin & Associates. He soon became a board member of the Southland Lutheran Home and Geriatric Center in Norwalk. From this point on, he based his architectural practice on designing facilities and homes for the aging.

Upon accepting his award Carl recounted something his mother once said about retirement homes, "She said that she never wanted to live in 'one of those places', because in her day, a retirement home was on par with the county poor farm." Through four decades of practice Carl has devoted himself to designing senior care environments that are more 'home-like' and less like an institution.

During his long career he demonstrated personal compassion and dedication by writing codes, participating in senior-based organizations, speaking nationally on aging and co-inventing products. With a body of work that spans more than four decades and over 300 senior projects, Carl Irwin continues to be a devoted advocate for improving the quality of life for seniors.

Air Force Village West wins "Project of the Year"

Air Force Village West

Costa Mesa, CA - Air Force Village West received the SAGE Award for Project of Year on November 28th, 2007. The SAGE Award recognizes the developer of a completed age-qualified or age-targeted (50+) residential development that includes innovative or noteworthy elements – architectural or otherwise – and serves as a model for other housing developments. Established in 1989, Air Force Village West is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt, public benefit corporation open to all retired military officers and their spouses.

This niche market is well educated and well traveled, and appreciates the lifestyle amenities offered at Air Force Village West. The residents share a strong comradeship that is strengthened by a master planned community that offers a central core of togetherness but allows for individual privacy.

Studies determined the need to expand the campus by adding additional residences and services. Irwin Pancake Architects was retained to design and oversee this ambitious project. Additions included 35 single-family homes, the Village Café and kitchen, expansion of the dining room, and a multi-purpose room for the Assisted Living Residents. Water fountains were added at the entry creating a stronger sense of arrival.

A new chapel and a meeting hall are currently in design. Future plans may include more homes, a recreational building and sports courts. General Charles Lamb, President/CEO of Air Force Village West, was quoted as saying, "We feel honored to be the recipient of this meaningful award. There is nothing more rewarding than serving our military retirees in our 55+ community."
